Easson amongst the ferns

Photo taken by Kim

We have held off sharing Easson's birth announcement, in hopes that most people would have received their copies in the post by now. The above shot is our favourite of the three. Thanks Kim for sharing these images of the bambino with us.

One down, two more to go

In a recent post I mentioned progress on a blanket, well it is now complete and will be sent off in the post very soon! Hopefully it will keep Matthew warm and snug.

Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rachel Carson!
She was a remarkable individual and I truly admire and have tremendous respect for her intelligence, courage, perseverance, and genuine love of the natural world. If you haven't already, be sure to read some of her books, such as Silent Spring, The Sea Around Us, The Sense of Wonder (this title is a favourite of mine, especially as a gift for new parents), and others. You can learn more about Rachel Carson here and here. I will leave you with a bit of writing by Ms. Carson that I am particularly fond of. This excerpt is found in the book entitled: Always, Rachel: The Letters of Rachel Carson and Dorothy Freeman, 1952-1964.

“But most of all I shall remember the Monarchs, that unhurried westward drift of one small winged form after another, each drawn by some invisible force. We talked a little about their migration, their history. Did they return? We thought not; for most, at least, this was the closing journey of their lives.
But it occurred to me this afternoon, remembering, that it had been a happy spectacle, that we had felt no sadness when we spoke of the fact that there would be no return. And rightly – for when any living thing has come to the end of its life cycle we accept that end as natural.
For the Monarch, that cycle is measured in a known span of months. For ourselves, the measure is something else, the span of which we cannot know. But the thought is the same: when that intangible cycle has run its course it is natural and no unhappy thing that a life comes to its end.
That is what those brightly fluttering bits of life taught me this morning. I found a deep happiness in it – so, I hope, may you.”

Time to Think

Do you ever feel as though you have so many thoughts swirling around in your mind that you are not quite certain where to begin? I am slowly working on a couple of knitting projects and I have three books on the go at the moment. Most nights before bed I work on Sudoku puzzles, I find them so calming. I am enjoying food again, trying new recipes and loving the new season of fresh produce! Our container garden is coming along, the Cilantro and Bachelor Buttons we started from seed are doing marvelously well. I just picked up a small locally grown Julep Mint plant that should be larger than ever in no time. Our Jasmine has just finished blooming, the heavenly scent from its fragrant blossoms would greet you whenever the patio door was opened. There are two small succulents that are beginning to branch out and should be quite well established by the end of the summer. Much to think about and in time I may be able to formulate these many thoughts into coherent sentences.
Enjoy the journey!

Hello There May!!!

So we are ushering in a new month, by the way where did April get to?! I have been a bit on the quiet side these past couple of weeks. Now with a new month upon us and several new projects either in the works or at least under contemplation, I should be a bit more vocal over the coming days. Thanks for the patience. Don't forget to look for beauty, in even the most unlikely of places, one never knows, does one? I discovered the following quote while browsing through some photos on flickr and was smitten, please enjoy:

Suddenly, as rare things will, it vanished.
